Today, following the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing on the latest assaults on Americans’ voting rights, Stand Up America Deputy Political Director Reggie Thedford released the following statement:

“Every American—no matter our race or our zip code—should be able to exercise our constitutional right to vote. Yet for generations, policymakers have erected deliberate barriers to voting in a brazen attempt to keep tens of millions of eligible citizens—especially Black, Brown, and Indigenous Americans—from casting ballots.

“While GOP senators like Lindsay Graham used today’s hearing to defend conservatives’ attempts to keep millions of people from voting in future elections, Senate Democrats and their witnesses made critically clear that Congress must intervene to restore the Voting Rights Act.

“The Senate must now move swiftly to pass two landmark voting rights bills: The For the People Act, which would expand access to the ballot across the country, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, which would strengthen voting rights and reestablish the preclearance requirement that ensures no law can be implemented that discriminates against voters based on our race or our background.

“With hundreds of voter suppression bills moving across the country, it’s time for Congress to send both of these bills to President Joe Biden’s desk without so-called lawmakers like Ted Cruz abusing the filibuster to block them.”

Earlier this year, Stand Up America urged Democrats in Congress and the White House to pass both the For the People Act (H.R. 1 // S. 1) and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act (H.R. 4) within President Biden’s first 100 days in office.
