OUR PAST FIGHTS

We make our voices heard at the local, state, and federal level. From helping pass crucial campaign finance reform to expanding access to the ballot box — our community has mobilized to strengthen our democracy and make it work for all Americans, not just a wealthy few:

Emails and calls to lawmakers urging permanent re-enfranchisement: 2,200+

Permanent Voting Rights for 43,000+ Formerly Incarcerated New Yorkers

Thanks to constituent advocacy by our New York community and a broad coalition of activists, we successfully passed legislation that automatically and permanently re-enfranchises nearly 43,000 formerly incarcerated New Yorkers. This legislation is a big step toward building a democracy that represents all New Yorkers.

CALLS IN FAVOR OF AUTOMATIC VOTER REGISTRATION IN NY: 9,000+

Automatic Voter Registration in New York State

After two years of advocacy, in which the Stand Up America community was the largest driver of constituent calls to legislators, automatic voter registration was signed into law in New York State in late 2020. This legislation could add over a million New Yorkers to the voter rolls once it goes into effect.

AMERICANS CONTACTED AS PART OF OUR GOTV CAMPAIGN: 25,000,000+

Mobilizing for the 2020 Election

Leading up to the 2020 election, Stand Up America ran a robust get out the vote campaign to protect our democracy by sending Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House. In 2020, our digital-first organizing helped 100,000 voters get registered and 100,000 vote by mail or find their polling place.

PEER-TO-PEER TEXTS SENT IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSITION 113: 295,000+

Advocating for the National Popular Vote in Colorado

In 2020, we ran a successful digital campaign reaching over 250,000 Coloradans to support Proposition 113, a ballot measure preserving the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact in Colorado. If adopted by enough states, the NPV Compact would reform the electoral college by ensuring the winner of the popular vote wins the presidency.

CALLS IN SUPPORT OF REPEALING 50-A: 2,000+

Repealing 50-a in New York State

In June 2020, our community in New York placed over 2,000 calls to repeal 50-a, an outdated section of the New York Civil Rights Law that shielded police misconduct from public view. The repeal is a crucial step towards greater police accountability and ending police violence against Black and Brown New Yorkers.

CALLS TO CONGRESS IN SUPPORT OF ELECTION SECURITY FUNDING: 120,000+

Election Assistance Funds Included in the CARES Act

In early 2020, we drove over 120,000 constituent calls to Congress to urge lawmakers to include election assistance funding in the CARES Act COVID-19 relief package. We ultimately won $400 million to support Americans voting safely and securely during a pandemic.

CALLS TO THE NY LEGISLATURE TO PASS THE TRUST ACT: 4,000+

The New York TRUST Act

In 2019, we fought for the successful passage of the TRUST Act: a historic bill that allows Congress to request up to 6 years of presidential state tax returns from the State of New York. After driving over 4,000 calls, this legislation gave Congress the ability to access more of Trump’s tax information than ever before.

CALLS MADE TO FUND ELECTION SECURITY: 120,000+

The Fight for Secure Elections

Since the 2016 presidential election, multiple reports confirmed that Russia hacked our election systems in all 50 states. So to protect our elections, the Stand Up America community made over 120,000 calls, wrote letters to the editor, visited lawmakers’ offices, and sent thousands of emails and tweets, urging elected officials to prioritize election security funding for states. We were the largest driver of grassroots actions demanding election security, and Congress ultimately allocated $425 million in funding.

CONSTITUENT CALLS TO LAWMAKERS IN SUPPORT OF IMPEACHMENT: 300,000+

The First Fight to Impeach and Remove Trump

After the Mueller report was released, we launched a campaign to pressure Congress to open a formal impeachment inquiry into Donald Trump. Following over 300,000 calls and tens of thousands showing up to rallies in all 50 states, the House of Representatives impeached Donald Trump. While the Senate ultimately acquitted him in February 2020, we stood up for our democracy and rule of law by fighting to hold Trump accountable.

EMAILS TO ENACT CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM IN NEW YORK STATE: 2,500+

Campaign Finance Reform in NY State

Throughout 2019 and 2020, the Stand Up America community was one of the loudest voices demanding that the New York State Legislature pass much needed campaign finance reform, sending over 2,500 emails and making 1,600 calls. As a result of our efforts, New York will have the first statewide small dollar-matching program in the nation.

CALLS TO CONGRESS TO AGAINST TRUMP’S TAX SCAM: 50,000+

Tax Fight

In 2017, the Stand Up America community called Congress more than 50,000 times to oppose Trump’s tax scam and fight for an economy that works for all Americans, not just the wealthy few.
