Group Has Driven 55,000 Actions Pressuring Congress to Pass S. 1
Earlier this year, Stand Up America launched a six-figure campaign demanding the Senate pass the For the People Act (H.R. 1 // S. 1)—a transformational package of pro-democracy and anti-corruption reforms that would combat the dramatic increase in Jim Crow-style, anti-voter legislation being proposed by Republican lawmakers across the country. Ahead of the bill’s markup in the Senate Rules Committee tomorrow, Stand Up America is today announcing that it’s doubling down on its investment, ramping up grassroots pressure, and getting the help of some big names to do it.
As part of that work, Stand Up America has engaged its community of two million progressives on the issue, driving more than 55,000 grassroots actions in recent months targeting the Senate in support of S. 1, including 25,000 constituent calls. It’s also working with influencers like Paul Bettany, Wanda Sykes, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus to urge everyday Americans to call their senators and demand they pass this landmark bill.
“Across the country, as Republicans work to suppress the vote, activists and advocates are standing up to demand that the Senate move quickly to protect our voting rights and expand access to the ballot,” said Joe Hines, Stand Up America’s Digital Director. “Our community of two million progressives is fired up about the For the People Act—and they won’t stop ramping up pressure on the Senate until S. 1 is signed into law.”
To continue building grassroots pressure on the Senate to pass the For the People Act, and not let the filibuster stand in the way, Stand Up America has:
Texted more than 2.7 million constituents of key senators through an innovative, volunteer-driven peer-to-peer texting campaign
Run digital ads nationally on Facebook, Google, and in publications like Mother Jones, reaching more than 537,945 Americans to educate them about S. 1 and help them take action (see example below)
Partnered with other voting rights champions like Color of Change, End Citizens United // Let America Vote, and Vote Save America to educate the public about the urgent need to pass federal voting rights legislation
Engaged with celebrity influencers to raise awareness and drive action towards passing S. 1, including Jason Alexander, Paul Bettany, Yvette Nicole Brown, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Debra Messing, Alyssa Milano, Patton Oswalt, Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, Ricky Whittle, and many others
In April, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain indicated that the Senate is working to pass the landmark legislation by August. Recent polling shows that a vast majority of the American people—including Republican voters—support the For the People Act.
Stand Up America will continue ramping up pressure on the Senate to pass the law until it is sent to President Joe Biden’s desk.
