This week the U.S. Supreme Court denied Donald Trump’s final attempt to block his tax returns from being released to New York prosecutors. In response, Stand Up America spokesperson Ryan Thomas issued the following statement urging Congress to pass the For the People Act (HR1/S1) to prevent future office holders from following Trump’s lead:

“Donald Trump’s presidency will go down as the most corrupt in American history—and that started the day he broke decades of precedent by refusing to disclose his tax returns.

“No future president or nominee should be allowed to hide their conflicts of interest from the American people again—and that’s why Congress must pass this transformational bill to codify decades of practice by requiring presidential and vice presidential candidates to disclose their finances to the public.

“Every lawmaker should want that kind of basic transparency from the Oval Office, regardless of whether it’s occupied by Republican or a Democrat. Lawmakers supporting this bill are standing up against corruption, and those in opposition are sanctioning it. That’s a distinction we’ll make sure voters are aware of in 2022.”

Since endorsing the For The People Act in 2019, Stand Up America has driven thousands of calls to lawmakers from all 50 states urging its swift passage. The group has championed the bill, in part, because of the provisions requiring presidential and vice presidential candidates to publicly release at least 10 years of their tax returns.
