SUA Responds To Sen. Feinstein On Filibuster: Your Position Is Unacceptable and Untenable

After Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) said “I don’t believe in doing that” when asked if she would eliminate the filibuster and expand the Court, Stand Up America spokesperson Ryan Thomas issued the following statement:

“This is an unacceptable and untenable position for Sen. Feinstein to take when both our democracy and her own state are on fire, and when the future of the Supreme Court is in peril—especially given her position as Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“If Democrats hope to undo the damage of the Trump administration or pass any meaningful legislation to address the crises this country faces, including climate change and COVID-19, nothing can be off the table. It’s time for every Senate Democrat to meet the moment and pledge their support for abolishing the filibuster—what President Obama called a ‘Jim Crow relic’—as soon as they flip the Senate.”

In September, Stand Up America joined a coalition of progressive groups in dialing up the pressure to eliminate the filibuster. Early this year, Stand Up America also pressured Joe Biden during the Democratic primary to pledge support for ending the 60-vote threshold to pass legislation in the Senate.
